Random Team Generator
Split any group of names into fair, random teams in seconds.
Dividing a class or sports squad into teams always sparks arguments about fairness — unless the split is random. This free generator deals your list of names into as many balanced teams as you ask for, using a secure shuffle. Everyone lands in a random team, sizes stay as even as possible, and results display in clear cards.
Your teams will appear here.
Teams are dealt round-robin from a shuffled list, so sizes differ by at most one.
How to use the Random Team Generator
- Paste your names into the box, one name per line, and set how many teams you want.
- Click Generate Teams to shuffle the names and deal them into balanced groups.
- Click Copy All to copy every team list, or read them straight from the cards.
Random Team Generator — FAQs
How are the teams formed?
First the name list is shuffled with the Fisher-Yates algorithm using a secure random source, then names are dealt round-robin — first to Team 1, second to Team 2, and so on. This keeps team sizes within one person of each other and makes every grouping equally likely, so nobody can claim the split was rigged.
Can teams have uneven sizes?
Only by the smallest possible amount. With round-robin dealing from a shuffled list, sizes differ by at most one — for example, eleven people split into three teams become groups of 4, 4 and 3. That is the fairest possible outcome for any group that does not divide evenly, and it happens automatically with no settings to fiddle with.
What is this useful for?
Sports captains splitting players, teachers forming project groups, workshop facilitators creating breakout teams, gaming lobbies balancing squads, and office secret-Santa style groupings. Random assignment also avoids the social awkwardness of picking teams publicly, since nobody is chosen first or last — the shuffle decides.
Is my name list private?
Yes, completely. The shuffle and team assignment run entirely in your browser with no network requests, accounts or storage. Your roster of names never leaves your device, which makes the tool safe for class lists, employee names and any other group roster you would rather keep to yourself.
